Military Bloggers
Are military bloggers coming under fire? That is the subject that has weighed heavily on my mind today. For more information, I suggest you read http://www.mudvillegazette.com/archives/001226.html
It seems as though not only military bloggers are coming under fire by critics but spouses and supporters may also feel the heat of this current hot topic. (portion edited and removed by author)
One of the first things I learned as an Army wife is to watch what I say. Honestly as a spouse, I do not have much more information that the average civilian watching CNN. Most of what I do hear are rumors. Some turn out to be based on some truth but most do not. If by some chance I were to come across a piece of information, I would keep it to myself. I do not know where this information may end up, and I do not want to be responsible for putting the safety of our great service men and women in danger.
If in time this information becomes public knowledge, I may then write on it after the fact. As a general rule, I keep any information and/or rumors to myself until then. With my husband in South Korea, this may not be as much of an issue say as if he were in Iraq or Afghanistan. Still I keep to my general rule. My husband is in the military and he is over seas.
Yes I have freedom of speech. I have never been asked to watch what I say. I don't want anyone to take this to mean I have been told I cannot speak freely. I choose to not put information about my husband's job, etc... in my blog. Mostly my blog is intended to be about my life at home with the children while my husband is away. What it is like to be at the other end of the spectrum of a deployment.
Another issue that comes to mind before I sit down to post is just who would be reading my blog and for what reasons. I do not mean I try to cater my blog to fit a particular audience. This may sound bitchy of me but this is my blog and it will be as I feel it should be. What I mean is out in the world and in America, sadly enough, there are people who are anti military. I have personally felt the sting of some hateful rants voiced toward my husband, his choice of career, and myself. I have dealt with this on my blog, by another blogger, and in person. Sometimes before I hit that 'publish post' button I wonder if my words could be used in their anti-military thinking. Of course for some of those people anything I say can be twisted and used to suit their own purposes.
I think military bloggers are a great treasure to America. Only through the eyes of some one serving in the military can one truly understand just what it is like to serve our country. Every freedom we enjoy today has been for brave men and women who have fought to ensure this. Our great country today, and the country of tomorrow, comes at the price of the sacrifices freely made brave men and women in the military who stood up to, and will continue to stand up to, injustice.
I hope military bloggers will continue to share their stories so we will know the whole truth. Not some cut down version fitted to fill a 3 minutes space in a news account. I believe for all they have done their words have a right to be heard. In that same token, I also believe that the safety of the mission and the safety of others should also be protected. I think spouses, girl friends, boy friends, family members, and so on should also share in this responsibility when deciding what to do with information they may overhear.
My love and prayers go out to all our military men and women tonight and always.

Yeah, I noticed where the DOD looked at your journal tonight and I wanted to call... I was beginning to wonder if it might be too late or not, after Josh and i got off the phone not too long ago. I don't see anything you write as a threat, so I hope you continue to post as often as you like.

IF anything happens and you ever have to take this blog down, please let your regular readers know where you go.
I know I have come across certain blogs that even had to be careful about expressing their religious beliefs on bloggerland. Especially ones in specific countries.
I remember when T. was AF, our phone was tapped constantly. Sometimes I would say "hey whoever is listening, have a good day" just to release my frustrations!

Because of where Jimmy is in Korea, everything he and I say and do is watched. We had little microcassette recorders and made little tapes that we sent back and forth...well, they started intercepting his. I got a couple of opened, EMPTY mailers in my mailbox. It's not like there was anything on them but a million I love you's, but...
I try to follow OPSEC, and honestly, I cannot tell what I am not allowed to know. But I knew it was just a matter of time until they started cracking down on military bloggers.

Wow Joan. Can't believe they were missing. I got banned LOL. DH can't read my blog over there because I somehow ended up on the ban list. Not by the US gov, by the way, or by the military. Just didn't want anyone to think that. It's a Korea thing.

just to let you know you have a special place in my heart with all the other spouses of our military. You and the others have a tough job knowing that your loved one is far away with all the uncertainties in this world. Your sacrificess and those of your husband are appreciated. i read the military blogs, not so much for info on the war but to have a chance to comment and let our troops know that there are a lot of us in the US who keep them in our thoughts and prayers.

LornKanga, I just re read your comment and the one at Mudville Gazette. I understand what you are saying now. That was part of the reason I was rethinking what I posted but now I understand. It wasn't really a big worry of mine. More it was something I was curious about. I knew I did not post info I should not.
I so far have had no problems. I was speaking more of other military bloggers that have run into some problems. (My War) and others.
I wanted to extend my view that a military wife, family member, etc... should also share in the responsibility and watch what he/she may post to prevent putting a service member in danger. Not only may a service member let something accidentally slip but a family member could do so also accidentally. I also wanted to offer my support to military bloggers.
