Day 15

Grants, New Mexico

We set out early this morning and headed for the Petrified Forest.

I was in awe of the whole park.

I wondered if we would see much petrified wood. Enough to make the trip worth it.

We did, and it was.

We also saw petroglyphs.

And Ancient ruins.

After lunch we headed down the road bound for the Bandera Volcano and Ice Cave. I had never heard of this place before. We happen to pick up a pamphlet with info about it in one diner we ate at a couple of days ago. Since it was near where we were driving anyway, we decided to go.

We took a hike up to the site of the collapsed volcano crater than had erupted some 10,000 before.

Passing lava rocks and ancient trees along the way.

Then we hiked back down, around a bend, and down to a collapsed lava tunnel which is now an ice cave. The temps never rising above 31 degrees F.

I have to admit all the hiking in the heat and high elevation kicked my butt. My legs are burning. I figured since I burned so many calories I could indulge in a big diner.
So I did. And dessert too.

Day 14

Winslow, Arizona
Along the famous Route 66

We started out this morning heading for the Grand Canyon. Beautiful does not do this natural wonder justice.

Another picture of the canyon. (Taken from the observation tower pictured below)

Observation tower at the Grand Canyon National Park. We went inside the tower and climbed to the top.

Down the road while looking for a place to stop for lunch we saw a sign for the "Meteor Crater".
Of course we had to go.
A five minute detour off the road and we were there. After paying an admission fee we climbed tons of stairs to look at this huge crater.
Two miles across it is the largest preserved crater in the world.

A genuine piece of the meteor that caused the crater. The entire meteor was estimated to be about the size of half a football field.

Day 13 - Back on the Road

Lake Powell/Page Arizona

I had a great visit with my family in Utah. Of course it came to an end too fast. As always it was tough to say goodbye.

We stayed with my mom and step dad for the first couple of days. Mom treated us to some good home cooking. Her food is always delicious and was doubly so after being on the road so many days.

Then we went to stay with my sister and brother in law for two days. I had a great time catching up and playing with my nephews and niece.

My brother came out and I got to meet my new nephew who is just 2 months old. He is just about the cutest thing I've ever seen...not that I'm biased or anything.

I got to visit my grandpa and grandma, and got a quick visit with an old friend.

Before we left I stopped by my dad's grave. It was the first time I've been by since his funeral over 4 years ago. It was also the first time I saw his headstone. I got out of the car alone at first to have a private talk with my dad.

I put some coins we picked up from Canada on his grave. Dad always liked coins. I also took an American flag pin out of my car and left it on the top of his headstone.

It was tougher than I expected. Even after all those years. I broke down as soon as I saw his name.

We set out early this morning. This afternoon we stopped to see the Glen Canyon Dam.

We then drove the short distance to Page too look for a hotel and picked up some awesome pizza.

Tomorrow we will see the Grand Canyon.

(To my family: I love you all and miss you already!)

Mountains close to home.

Day 6

Idaho Falls, Idaho

Today we drove out of Washington, through the tip of Idaho, into Montana, and back into Idaho.

This is where we stopped for breakfast. On the other side was a huge gift shop. Of course I had to do a little shopping. The prices were great. Other gift shops I've had stopped in have been been over priced. This one was wonderful, even on the cheap side.

Out of the gift shop came something that would serve to embarrass me later. Just when I thought I could no longer be embarrassed, Missy proved me wrong.

Missy bought a nice little gadget called "Dr. Fart". A little toy that makes loud gassy sounds when the button was pushed. She took her new toy into the first gas station we stopped in. Walking to the restrooms she said "Mom, I got to go real bad" and then pushed the button emitting a juicy sounding fart.

She didn't stop there. The poor woman who chose the stall next to Missy was subject to the rips coming from Missy's stall. She even added in a few grunts and groans for extra effect.

Tomorrow we will be in Utah, somewhere around Salt Lake City, visiting my family. I cannot wait to see them all! I have a new nephew to meet. My baby brother's first child. So far I've only seen pictures. I also have two other nephews and a niece I have not seen in awhile.

It will be nice to be out of the car for awhile and to relax with family.

How we found Chase this morning. In his sleep he crawled up into the nightstand.

Some sort of Budweiser plant. Either that or these people really like their beer.

Day 5

Spokane, Washington

Today we entered back into the U.S. It was a scenic drive the whole way.

We passed orchards and vineyards in British Columbia, and mountains and enormous evergreen trees in Washington.

Missy has been fine today. No dizzy spells or paleness. Thank goodness.

The kids have been great through this whole road trip. There has been a little bickering between them but that's to be expected. All in all they have been great.

JR has enjoyed being the navigator. He looks over the maps and informs me of what town we are coming up on next. He is also the designated car photographer. Not that he takes pictures of cars, he gets to take the pictures from the car while I am driving.
Chase and Missy enjoy the snacks and movies on their portable DVD players.

Some of the tall trees in Washington. You can kind of see how large they are in comparison to the car in front of me.

Day 4

100 Mile House, British Columbia, Canada

Today we drove through mountains for most of the drive. We had beautiful scenery the whole way. Gorgeous mountains, cool waterfalls, and blue and green lakes.

We did not see a lot of wildlife today. We did see a bear, a coyote, one buffalo (which happen to be at a bison ranch) and several horses and cows.

I am starting to get used to the mileage in Canada. Instead of miles like I am used too, travel is measured in kilometers. though I still cannot figure out the temperatures. They are in Celsius.

Missy had one dizzy spell today. Hubby and I sat her down and made her eat. I also gave her vitamins, and made her drink some water.
Since we still do not know why she passed out the other day we are trying to cover every base.

Update to Day 3

Last Thursday:

I have been without Internet now for several days. I have to say it is about to drive me nuts. I never quite realized just how much I use the Internet until this week.

I am keeping a post in Word, adding and summarizing each day, until I get to post this.

We hit the road tomorrow morning and already we've had some adventures.

Monday we passed our housing inspection with flying colors. I was relived to sign it over after scrubbing it top to bottom for days and hours on end.

Tuesday I smashed two of my fingers, breaking one and injuring the other.

I'm not sure exactly how it happen, everything seemed to happen so fast. One second I was moving the spare tire to the trailer to the hitch, the tire slipped and in the next second two of my fingers were caught in between the hitch and the tire.

Being my brilliant self (can you hear the sarcasm) I yanked my hand free without lifting the tire. All I thought at the time was that hurts I need to get my hand free. I didn't allow myself the time to think through the best way to go about it.

On Wednesday my van ate a CD. It is now refusing to give it back. It even tries to tell me, by flashing a cute little message, that there is no CD.

This really dampened my day. I've been stocking up on CD just for this trip. I know from the drive up here there are alot of places when you get no, or crappy radio reception.

I would hook my iPod into the car charger. I have one of those neat little gadgets that allows you to play your iPod through your car stereo, but that fuse blew awhile back and now no new fuse will work in it when replaced.

My van hates me. Lately the feeling is mutual.

Thursday morning my new laptop broke. Hubby and I rushed it to the computer emergency room. 3 hours and 91 dollars later the computer doctors told us there was no hope. My beautiful laptop is now just a hunk of useless plastic and metal.

How am I still writing you might ask. Well, we bit the bullet and bought another one. One with warranty this time.

DAY 1
Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada

Friday

We started off at 5:00 a.m. We started driving in the rain. We drove south and the storm was heading north, so soon we had clearer skies.

All went well for the first two hours, then I heard a thump-thump. I knew in an instant that could not be good.

I pulled off the road with Hubby behind me. We found that one of my cargo straps holding down my tarp on the trailer had come undone. In doing so, hit the metal covering thingy (I do believe that is the technical word) covering one of the trailer tires.

After some frustration, a little cussing and kicking of the tires, we got the tarp retied. As soon as I got back in my van and started the engine my CD player spit out my hijacked CD.

To summarize: the rest of the day was spent pulling over every couple of hours to retie straps. we finally found a store that had some and the new ones held up better.

We hit several storms, even encountering hail, and was stopped several times for construction.work. We made terrible time today. Arriving to Whitehorse 3 hours behind schedule.

To top the day off we ended up in a crappy motel tonight. There is no dresser, the t.v.stand is falling apart, and there is no Internet access as advertised. But Hubby and I are at the point where we are just too frustrated and too tired to look for another with vacancies. The sheets smell clean, there is hot water, a small coffee pot (very essential), and double locks on the door. It will do for a few hours of sleep.

Here's hoping tomorrow goes better than today did.

DAY 2
Muncho Lake, British Columbia, Canada

Saturday

Once again no Internet. (not any I can get too. There is one pay-as-you-use computer in the lobby of our current hotel but the hotel is packed and I'm too beat to wait in line) Today was a terrifying day. We had a huge scare. I will get to that in a minute, I will say now that everyone is okay.

The morning started off well. The tarp on the trailer stayed in place. The new straps are doing well. we had very little road construction, and only a few light rain storms.

we were making excellent time. We had one stop for breakfast and pit stops now and then. Around noon we decided it was time for a longer break. We stopped at Watson lake in the Yukon.

On our drive to Alaska we had passed a placed called the "Sign Post Forest". A 'Forest' of signs and license plates people have left from all over Canada, and the U.S. We swore on our drive back we would leave a sign.

Before we left housing we thought again our sign, but things got hectic and we never got around to figuring out how to make the sign let alone get around to constructing one.

Today at Watson Lake we spotted the Sign Post Forrest again. We walked around and took pictures. As we were about to leave I had a brain storm. I did notice not all the sign were fancy made. I saw a few toilet seats, even a plastic lid used. I decided I would find something in my van I could use for a sign. I wanted to leave our mark.

I scrounged around the van and then remembered I had a large pack of blank CDs. I grabbed a CD, a permanent marker and made our sign. I wrote: From Alaska to Texas. I then wrote our family name and date.

I looked around and found a thumb tack and a blank space in the forest and nailed our CD sign up in the Watson Lake, Sign Post Forrest.

After our forest tour we filled up with gas and went in to fill up on snacks. It was then that our perfect day went terribly wrong.

While standing in line to pay for our snacks Missy told me her stomach felt weird. I talked to her a bit and told we'd hurry and get her to the van so she could lay down.
Missy suffers from car sickness now and then and I thought that may be the problem.

I turned my back to her to pay. A couple of seconds she called out "Mom!"

I turned around just in time to catch her. She fainted. She passed out again and turned sheet white. Even her lips were white.

People in the gas station were so nice. showing their concern and trying to help. When we asked where the nearest hospital was one man gave us directions. Then before we could even get Missy into the car he had rushed up along side us in his truck and said he'd lead the way.

we rushed Missy into the emergency room where she was seen quickly. They ran tests and she slowly started to seem more like herself.

All the test were unable to tell us exactly what went wrong. We were told it could have been anything. Something as simple as getting too much sun to a start of a more serious problem.

She was released from the Emergency room with instructions to watch her closely for the next couple of days...like we had to be told that! We were so scared we will probably watch her like a hawk for the next several months. I've honestly never been so scared in my life.

Missy felt much better by the afternoon though she couldn't doze off in the car or even sigh without all of us worrying and asking if she was okay.

We stopped for the night at a beautiful hotel.

Day 3

Fort St. John, British Columbia, Canada

Sunday

I have finally have access to Internet!!

Missy is doing fine today. We are still worrying over her and watching her closely. The fear of it all has not gone away for me yet. I was so scared for her yesterday.

We took it a little easier today and checked into a hotel early.

I nothing too interesting to report today. Other than nearly losing my favorite pair of sun glasses in a port a potty, my beautiful hotel having no coffee, and having to drive for nearly two hours before I found a place open so I could get my first cup, the day had been pretty event less. After yesterday that is just fine with me.

We've already been swimming in the hotel pool. the first pool we've found on the trip so far, and now I'm blogging and doing laundry while Hubby lets the kids swim again.

A bear we saw yesterday. We got up right along side it in the car.

Moving & The Gold Dredge

We are about to start our first leg of our journey. This afternoon we are checking into temporary housing. I'm hoping they have Internet connections there. If not I will blog again when I get Internet.

We are going to stay in temp housing until Friday morning when we start our drive. I will be blogging throughout the trip (counting on the fact each hotel will have Internet connections) updating on our locations and posting pictures. It will be quite an adventure.

We are driving from Fairbanks, Alaska through Canada, and down to Texas with three kids, two adults, two vehicles and a trailer. I would love to take you along with us and share our adventures through my blog.

~~~~
We will be spending the weekend running back to our housing unit to scrub it out.
If any of you has ever cleared military housing before you know what a pain in the butt this is.
The unit has to be spotless. Looking as if no one has ever lived there. We have two stories and a basement in our housing unit. 4 bedrooms and three baths. That's a lot of cleaning.
Monday we have our final housing inspection and God willing, if we pass, we will have a little time to chill and relax before hitting the road on Friday.
~~~~~
This last weekend we took a break from the packing to go to a gold dredge. We got a tour from "Texas Pat" who took us through the old dredge and the grounds (which including an old railroad cart, warehousing, an old bath house, and chow hall) before showing us how to pan for gold.

It was incredible. Just the history of the place was amazing. Panning for gold was fun too. We all ended up with some gold to take home. They weighed our gold at the end of the tour and gave us their dollar amounts. The five of us got gold worth amounts ranging from $5.30 to $10.80.

Here are a few pictures of our tour to Gold Dredge #8.

7 Things About Me

My apologies to Jemimah she tagged me quite a while ago and I promised to respond. I'm sorry it took me so long. She tagged me for 7 things about me. So here goes:

1. Among other fears I have a huge fear of crocodiles and alligators. I don't even like to view them in the zoo.

2. I once made a huge fool of myself when I thought I was being attacked by a jellyfish. After yelling and running (or trying to run in nearly chest deep water) to the shore I found out it was only a prickly piece of seaweed.

3. I have very strange and very vivid dreams.

To give you an example I once dreamed that I was in a wheel chair, not because of an injury but because it was like my vehicle. In fact in my dream everyone rode around in wheel chairs when they wanted to get around. It was like riding a bicycle.

But, it gets stranger. To go faster you popped a wheelie. I was being chased, in my wheel chair, by two men in black suits also riding in wheel chairs. They had guns and were trying to shoot me. But for some reason that only made sense in my dream, they could only shoot me if they were right along side me.

So there I was in my high powered wheel chair popping wheelies like crazy trying to outrun, so to speak, my wheel chair bound assailants.

To make matters more complicated, because so far this was tame for one of my dreams, there were mad dogs along the rode I was wheeling down. I had to dodge them, because they like my gun wielding attackers could only attack if I got very close to them.

4. I have a weakness for chocolate. It's so bad I could never be a spy. I don't know how I would do under distress but wave a chocolate bar in front of my face and I'd sing like a canary.

5. I hate the new car smell. It makes my stomach turn. When we get new vehicles I have to spray mine down with a lot of smell good spray.

6. I squeeze the toothpaste from the middle.

7. I have a tattoo of a quill pen on my left arm.
